Ready, Set, Review like Crazy!

Today I woke up with a bit less stress, since I know how to get to school now!  Yay! Being from Los Angeles, public transportation is not too familiar, so the bus (in another language too!) made me really nervous! I just like to jump in a car and drive! However, today I felt pretty good about the whole commute thing! It's also really fun to wake to a house full of energy! The kids were playing and running around while I was getting ready, so they forced me to wake up right away!

Ohayou!

While I was washing my face, Kaho even wrapped herself around my leg as protection while she was being chased by Kaho! It was a pretty funny sight. But an even better sight? My breakfast!

Today, my mom prepared a Japanese western-style breakfast! I was once again SO impressed. Just look at the presentation! My mom made the bread herself with mochi flour! and look at the little dots of Kewpie mayo on the hot dogs! It's all in the details. And the details were perfect. Yes.

She also made this tamago yaki herself! So pretty and yummmmms.

With this breakfast and coffee in my system, I was ready for my first day of real class! It's getting more real everyday. Eek sauce!

This year, Princeton in Ishikawa has fifty students (Grad and undergrad) from various schools, including Harvard, Columbia, Yale, Wesleyan, and of course, Princeton. Because of all the natural disasters in Japan last year, PII had an uncertain future, but this year has the second largest group of students! (There were 51 students two years ago). Twenty eight of us are 2nd year Japanese students, while the rest are 3rd year. Today, we got split into our sections of 8-10 people each and reviewed various grammar structures that we should know before going ahead with tons of new lessons! Even though I already learned everything that we reviewed today, it still made my head spin! We were speeding through the review so fast for three hours! By the end, my brain felt FULL. Thanksgiving full. It was all good though. No complaints!

Me and Pudding-chan. We are kind of besties.

However, after class, we were all ready to be outside! So, after our stop at Family Mart, we walked to the Kanazawa Station to eat under the Motenashi Dome.

For lunch, I got various nimono (above) and tako wasabi (below). The tako (octopus) wasabi looked kind of strange, which is exactly why I bought it! I like trying weird sounding/looking food...and it was really good! The small green pieces are diced wasabi root, so it was spicy and really fresh. I've never had anything like it!

 Look at that model behavior.
かっこいい会社いん 見たい!

I also got this coffee drink, since ya know, I was feeling pretty uptight from class and I needed something to take the edge off! haha. This coffee seemed to have me covered, with its promise to "Keep You Relaxed." Lolz. Answers always seem to come from bottles.....I kid, I kid.
This may be the mother of all acrostic poems. The "Keeps" adds a nice, jarring dramatic pause, don't ya think? Such lyricism.

After lunch, we took a courtesy visit to the Ishikawa Prefectural Government Office. Since we got there a bit early for our ceremony, we had time to look around the art gallery!

The Princeton students of Princeton in Ishikawa with the famed Makino sensei! He's so chill. Just look at his pose.

At about 3 o'clock, our informal ceremony commenced with a welcome speech by Chief Officer of the International Exchange Division. It was interesting to learn more about Ishikawa since I didn't do any research before arriving here!

Some pictures of the handouts that we received:

We rode the bus back to Kanazawa Station, then returned to the Rifare building to do some homework until 6 pm. Time to go back home!

Dinner time!

Haruki loved the おみそしる!早く食べました!

Wow! I am getting so spoiled here! Oden, cucumber tsukemono, rice with chirimen tsukudani, grilled aka karei, and miso soup! Many of the ingredients are local specialities, including the Anko fish (anglerfish) inside the miso soup, and the aka karei, which is a type of turbot caught here in Kanazawa!

Today at the ceremony, I learned that the fishery industry in Ishikawa brings in about 21.4 billion yen, ranking 1st along the Sea of Japan coast for the largest catch value of flying squid, yellowtail, pink shrimp, and more, meaning that I get to have delicious seafood for dinner! Winning!

Dinner time, then a little play time...

...then it was time to say お休みなさい!I better rest my brain, since tomorrow is the first day of new material! I can do it! Right?!

First Day of School!

This morning, I woke up at 7:30 to the sound of Kaho (meaning screaming, crying, playing, laughing...). I already feel like I am part of the family! In fact, I kind of woke up at 6 when Kaho and Haruki walked into my room calling "お姉さん!お姉さん!"...but I just played dead and they walked away. haha. sly tactics are the key to life. just kidding...I got ready for the day, then was presented with this awesome breakfast! woohoo! If Frosted Flakes represent the breakfast of champions, then this would be the breakfast of a fierce samurai, and Tony the Tiger would be more like an intense bearded dragon who would eat Tony! But I digress...

I was so impressed! A fried egg on top of a hidden round of thinly sliced ham, daikon tsukemono, and chirimen tsunomono, along with some leftover sukiyaki from dinner, and a hot bowl of gohan with...

More natto! I felt so Japanese...it was great.

After being spoiled by this homemade breakfast, I was thrown out into the real world to try to get to school on time! Luckily, all horror stories were avoided and I got to the Rifare building quite easily!

To get to the Rifare building, I first walk to the Kitamachi Nishi bus stop (about a 7 minute walk...the sign is above), then a 10 minute bus ride to the Rokumaemachi stop, then about another 10 minute walk to the Rifare building. Overall, it's about a half hour commute, so it's not too bad! It's also nice to stretch my legs in the morning before I get shuttled into class for three hours :/

Thankfully, the Rifare building is a surprisingly pleasant and open space! I had pictured an intimidatingly tall building with small windows and linoleum floors, with those tiny college-sized paddles they call desks to maximize the intense scary study atmosphere potential...if you know what I mean.

To begin, we had a short orientation/ welcoming meeting at 9. As you can see, the famed Makino sensee gave a little welcoming talk. He is basically celeb-status around these parts.

I also signed this pledge...that was kind of scary. It basically says that I can't speak English. Ever. Inside the building, on the day trips...or they will poke our eyes out with おはし。Just kidding...but we will get deducted a point every time we use English (if our sensees can hear us...muahahah).

After taking a short writing and speaking placement test, we all broke for lunch at Family Mart right next store! Conbini FTW! いつも.

Back to front: Marina Kaneko, Emmy Williams, and me! We all took Japanese 101 and 102 together this year at Princeton. チイズ!

Here is my bento! There were so many おいしいそう 食べ物、but this was just too pretty to pass up. I'm a sucker for nicely packaged things. Also, it was about $8, which is not bad for the quality and quantity! I'll take it over 8 items from the MacDonald's dollar menu any day!

We all had a great time at lunch...but we kind of double failed. First, we weren't supposed to eat outside of the store. だめ number 1. We were also being quite rambunctious and loud. だめ number 2. oops.

After lunch, we took a bus to the Kenrokuen Gardens! I thought that the tiny seats in the middle were a nice touch...punishment for the last ones on the bus, I guess.

Warning: Lots of photos ahead. I went a little snapshot crazy. But what can I say? It was beautiful!

Soon after we arrived, we participated in a tea ceremony in the tea house.

Inside the tea house

Beautiful (and おいしい) wagashi with matcha green tea

The weather is still comfortable here, so I enjoyed being outside all afternoon! It was also pretty cool to return to Kenrokuen during the daytime to see how different everything looked in the sunlight!

 Princeton 友達!

There was a photo shoot going on, so I decided to jump on the bandwagon and take some pictures of the model myself!

Wolens-san = Sassy-すぎます。Except that I'd have to agree with Wolens-san's accurate words of wisdom: there is no such thing as too much sass. それから、I guess I'll just say "Sass." werk.
I think the sun may have started to get to us. I was feeling pretty giddy towards the end. Or maybe it was the simple magic of さざえさん。

It was a great afternoon outing! We returned to Rifare, then hung out in the TV lounge for a while before I returned home. As I approached the house, Kaho ran out the door shouting "お姉さん!" in her brother's large sneakers. It was so adorable! What a great welcome back.

For dinner, we went to the best sushi restaurant in Kanazawa!

Below, miso soup made with a broth of large local clams, a variety of sushi to the left, and a special type of ama ebi to the right. その おすし は 私の 一番すきなすしだよ!

Here is a better picture of the ebi: up close and personal.

Haruki got the kid's meal...or shall I say boat? I thought it was so neat!
I'll take one of those to-go please!

Here is nasu (eggplant) sushi! I've never seen this before! We also got a version with marinated cucumber. Both were really good! They were actually one of my favorite parts of the whole meal!

Kanazawa is known for having great seafood, and these small ama ebi were no exception! Throughout the dinner, I tried three different types of shrimp, and all of them were とても おいしかったよ!

The kids requested these flowers of natto sushi. I think it's so great that Kaho and Haruki both love natto so much! Whenever someone mentions natto, at least one person scrunches up their face, but in this household, natto makes faces light up!

After dinner, the restaurant gave us these sushi lollipops. Sushi in different forms. love it.
Loved the day too! Tomorrow we start actual classes, so I hope I feel the same way!
